Mary Ellen Wilson (1864–1956) was an American child abuse victim whose case led to the creation of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the world's first child protection agency.
Ontario established the first Children's Aid Society and passed the Child Protection Act, making child abuse an indictable offence and promoting foster care.
The Protective Behaviours program was originated during the 1970s. Now widely used in Australia, the UK, and South Africa by various agencies.
